Disability Grants in New York

New York residents can get disability grants from a variety of sources. Many of these grants can be used to buy new or  used handicap vans, or to convert handicap vans. The conversion includes access ramps, lowered flooring, wheelchair or scooter lifts of various styles, turning automotive seating systems, adaptive driving hand controls, and more modifications and equipment.

These New York-based organizations can help you get a handicapped-friendly vehicle. All of these groups are available to help you, so be sure to contact any of them. Many will allow you to apply for financial aid. While others can direct you to sources of disability grants that may be available to you or your family members.

Furthermore, get in touch with state offices of national organizations and foundations that are dedicated to your particular cause of limited mobility. These organizations are great sources for funding assistance and valuable information and finding grants for disabled people in New York.

Sources for New York Disability Grants and Assistance 

Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR)

ACCESS-VR is the primary resource for New York State residents with disabilities who are looking or trying to keep a job. You can access a variety of support and services to help you get back to work. Moreover, this agency may offer a disability grant to help you get a wheelchair van.

Center for Assistive Technology (CAT)

The University of Buffalo’s School of Public Health and Health Professionals manage CAT. It aims to educate the public about assistive technology and increase accessibility for those who are in need. Although the Center doesn’t directly offer funding or disability grants, its many services and resources make it an excellent resource for information on how to afford a handicap van.

National Disability Institute

Assistive Technology Loan Program of the National Disability Institute offers referrals for assistive technology grants. This also includes funding for hearing and vision aids, standing wheelchairs, and home and vehicle modifications and business equipment. For the purchase or refinance of assistive technology, affordable loans are also available. Furthermore, for those over 18 years old, the loans could be a credit-building opportunity.

New York Aging and Disabilities Resource Centers (ARDCs)

Senior citizens and persons with disabilities can access the most valuable information and assistance from ADRCs. There are many offices located throughout the state that serve residents within their immediate area.

New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs (VA)

The VA in the state of New York is committed to providing comprehensive, prompt support for in-state veterans and their families. Disability grants are available for veterans who become disabled while on active military service or while receiving VA service, as well as those with existing disabilities that were aggravated under these circumstances.

New York State Independent Living Council (NYSILC)

NYSILC is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization created under federal mandate. To promote independence among New York’s most disabled residents, the Governor appoints the majority-disabled council. This body supports the state’s Independent Living Centers, and they could direct you to financial assistance for your mobility needs.
