California Association of Nonprofits
California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits) is a statewide policy alliance which brings together nonprofits to promote the communities they serve. This organization strives to see the larger picture and provides the nonprofit sector the support and recognition it deserves. Over 9,400 nonprofits in California have joined CalNonprofits. However, not all of them for the same reasons.
There are some who join because they want to protect nonprofits from bad legislation, such as the bill that was introduced in the State Assembly to remove the tax-exempt status for nonprofits who exceed a certain threshold for overhead. Then, there are those who join because they are looking for an insurance broker who understands nonprofits. Through the subsidiary CalNonprofits Insurance Services, they offer health insurance to over 14,000 employees of nonprofit organizations.
Some even join to support the advocacy to speak out to philanthropy. For instance, the Open Letter to Irvine Foundation board which the organization published. And, those who join to support the research, such as the first-ever economic study of California’s nonprofit sector called “Causes Count.” The organization has commissioned this economic study.
However, all of the members share a common commitment to being a part of the larger nonprofit sector. It is a commitment to work together to defend this sector, and to make everyone’s voices heard in state legislatures, county governments officials, philanthropy and the general public.
